2Book4
During the search, Taran, Gurgi, Fflewddur, and Kaw go looking in the woods for Prince Rhun when they notice that he disappeared. They find him safe in a hut with an absent owner, who is revealed as Glew the giant by his possessions. Next, they survive his giant cat, Llyan’s imprisonment, only to get trapped in a cave with eager Glew himself after trying to save Rhun from a deep pit. In there, Glew joyfully talks about what happened in his life and how he was encapsulated in this cave with no one to talk to until they came. As Taran requests for a way out, the giant gets to the point where he wants one of his companions to sacrifice his life to test his potion out. Refusing Rhun’s offer to help his friends, Taran succeeds in having him escape through a bat hole to go for help, using a human ladder. The prince, in turn, decides to turn around, and ends up knocking Glew down with the brightness of Eilonwy’s bauble, which he found earlier. For this, the others are grateful because they thought they would be stomped dead by Glew. I think it was foolish for Rhun to go back to his companions and waste more time before Glew comes and demands a sacrifice, and strongly state that this is one of the usual judgements that the prince takes. He made Taran and the others change their search target several times, attracting danger to all including himself, and the reason why they got stuck in a cave is because of his carelessness. I believe it was luck when Rhun came just in time as Glew striked, with Eilonwy’s bauble unintentionally shining in his hands. I also hope that this was a favor given to the concerned prince who chose to go back for the fairness of everything. I’m finished the book, and this is all of what I tell.
